Neil Addison

Brand and content strategist, copywriter and ghostwriter

Neil
Addison

I take complicated, technical and high-stakes material and build the communications that a specific audience will act on.

Fifteen years of brand architecture, content strategy, investor communications and ghostwriting for founders, fund managers and leadership teams across AI, biotech, fintech, healthcare, energy, entertainment and consumer markets.

I work the whole distance from diagnosis to finished copy: deciding what an audience needs to hear, in what order, and then writing it. The strategy is usually where the problem sits, and the writing is where the strategy proves itself.

What I do

Expert-Vetted on Upwork, which places me in the top 1% of the platform, and Top Rated Plus, with 72 completed contracts, 40 client reviews averaging 4.8 out of 5, and over £170,000 earned across enterprise-grade engagements.

Selected work

  1. Founding-stage brand architecture for an AI scientific discovery platform
  2. Investor communications for a philanthropic endowment fund
  3. Homepage messaging audit for a premium DTC water filtration brand
  4. Brand advisory and content strategy for a Swiss-based fintech venture
  5. Content strategy and advocacy communications for a European streaming platform
  6. A white paper built from a conference talk on pharma supply chain planning
  7. A customer story for an AI audit software company, from a recorded call
  8. UX copy and editorial direction for two loyalty and rewards platforms
  9. Brand story and launch communications for a smart home appliance brand

Founding-stage brand architecture for an AI scientific discovery platform

AI, biotech, Swiss-funded

A venture building a proprietary AI reasoning engine for immunobiology, with no name, no positioning, no messaging and four audiences to win at once: academic researchers, biotech R&D, government grant agencies and AI talent.

What I did

  • Brand naming with etymological analysis and competitive clearance.
  • Mission statement developed through three major iterations as the strategic brief shifted.
  • Messaging architecture across the four stakeholder groups, each with its own priorities and decision criteria.
  • Tagline development with strategic commentary, a content strategy scoped at 120 to 160 hours, and visual strategy direction.

Result

The name, mission and messaging framework were adopted in full as the venture's public identity.

Every line of copy arrived with its reasoning attached, so the founders could decide rather than react.

Investor communications for a philanthropic endowment fund

Philanthropy, high-net-worth donors

A 37-slide investor brochure with the direct ask buried on slide 34, a tone that wavered between institutional and offhand, and no sequence to carry a prospective donor from interest to commitment. Seed gifts were set at £50,000 and up.

What I did

  • Resequenced the brochure on direct-response principles: credibility, thesis, proof, then the ask.
  • Moved the ask forward to slide 7 as a primer and reprised it at the close with concrete giving mechanisms.
  • Built the content architecture and copy for a six-section website, including a donation page with tiered pathways and a consultation booking for major gifts.
  • Produced a condensed pitch deck for live presentation, with an annotated companion so the design team could implement every change with the reasoning in hand.

Result

A single communications system across brochure, deck and website, speaking with one voice to an audience used to institutional-grade material.

A homepage montage of children would have read as a children's charity to anyone skimming. It came out.

Homepage messaging audit for a premium DTC water filtration brand

Direct-to-consumer, conversion copy

A technically credible product with laboratory certification, elite athlete endorsements and measurable purity results, and a homepage that wasn't converting. The page ran Mission, Process, Benefits, Proof, so most visitors left before they reached the evidence.

What I did

  • Mapped the argument the page was making and where it lost people, before touching any copy.
  • Reordered the page as Problem, Solution, Proof, Process, leading with what contaminants do in tap water and the 99.9% removal figure.
  • Rewrote the tagline and the weakest lines, and cut premium language that signalled exclusivity when the product needed trust.

Result

The client implemented the changes and the conversion rate rose by around 30% the following month.

The mission statement was the weakest section on the page and sat in the strongest position.

Brand advisory and content strategy for a Swiss-based fintech venture

Fintech, retail and institutional investors

A technically credible platform describing itself as rebellious and disruptive in one breath and mature and sophisticated in the next. The white paper was a skeleton and there was no content strategy for two very different investor audiences.

What I did

  • A brand identity audit that resolved the contradiction in favour of the venture's real assets: maturity, neutrality and Swiss financial heritage.
  • A dual-channel content strategy separating retail and institutional audiences.
  • A ghostwritten long-form brand story in journalistic interview format, built as cornerstone content for blog, LinkedIn and press.
  • White paper co-creation from placeholder to substance, and an annotated audit of the investor deck across more than 20 slides.

Result

A coherent position built on what the company already had, and its first substantive piece of content marketing.

The deck review turned out to be the diagnosis: the contradiction sat on the ‘Who We Are’ slide.

Content strategy and advocacy communications for a European streaming platform

Media, regulated sector, 50+ consumers

A legally defensible service under sustained pressure from broadcasters, and a founder whose first instinct was an evangelical manifesto. Its subscribers, mostly older expatriates, wanted reliable television and nothing else.

What I did

  • A content strategy that challenged the founder's assumptions and split communications into two tracks under one brand position.
  • For consumers: a warm, lightly humorous brand narrative, tone of voice framework and homepage copy for a 50+ audience.
  • For industry: a formal long-form document that doubled as a pre-emptive legal defence, plus a company brochure for partners and press.
  • A consumer advocacy site with letter-writing tools to put pressure on legislators.

Result

Over 50 pages across seven deliverables and five audience segments, each track serving its audience without undermining the other.

Nobody pays for a yearly subscription to a service they think might close next month.

A white paper built from a conference talk on pharma supply chain planning

B2B, supply chain, pharmaceuticals

A European consultancy's conference presentation on digital supply chain twins existed as slides, speaker notes, several expert viewpoints and a customer use case split in two. It was episodic, repetitive and drifted between narrators.

What I did

  • Gave the paper one narrator and one argument, with the consultancy's team shown solving the problems it described.
  • Fused the split use case into a single, more specific worked example.
  • Cut repeated slide content openly, with commentary on every cut and options to reinstate, shorten further or repurpose material elsewhere.

Result

A two-part white paper that planning leaders can read in full without the deck or the speakers in the room.

It took several trial structures before the right one emerged. Every cut was explained so the client could reverse it.

A customer story for an AI audit software company, from a recorded call

AI, audit and accounting, US market

A discovery call with a partner at one of the twenty largest US accounting firms: expert, articulate, and in the order the conversation happened. The readers were auditors and finance leaders who would spot an overclaim at once.

What I did

  • Proposed four themes and a structure for approval before drafting a word.
  • Wrote a five-part story of about 1,700 words, shorter than first quoted because the material didn't need more.
  • Shaped the partner's spoken remarks into readable quotes, and delivered an annotated transcript tracing every quote to its source.

Result

The software's case made through the partner's own judgement, with every quote ready for his sign-off, inside a 12-hour cap.

AI that sifts every transaction is only worth something if a skilled auditor knows what to do with what it finds.

UX copy and editorial direction for two loyalty and rewards platforms

Loyalty technology, fintech, consumer and B2B

A points-based loyalty provider launching a checkout payments service and a members-only rewards site. Designs were in place, but much of the in-house copy read as translated, and the retailer pages spoke in the shopper's voice.

What I did

  • Rewrote landing pages for shoppers, retailers and loyalty programmes, each in the register its reader expected.
  • Took doubt-raising consent language away from the sign-up buttons and moved calls to action above the press section.
  • Edited transactional emails, the FAQ, the contact tree and the brand guidelines, then press, LinkedIn and recruitment copy.

Result

Copy that reads as native English, with commentaries that gave the in-house team rules it could keep applying.

‘Save on cash’ became ‘Boost your spending power’.

Brand story and launch communications for a smart home appliance brand

Consumer electronics, UK and US markets

A fast-growing Chinese maker of robot and cordless vacuums, selling mainly through Amazon, with a strong review record and a slogan and brand materials that read as translated.

What I did

  • A new slogan, ‘Smarter Living in the Here and Now’, written as a promise the products were already keeping.
  • A brand story that let the company's existing reputation do the persuading for buyers new to the name.
  • Launch articles and press releases for four products, each in separate UK and US editions.

Result

Three consecutive commissions over four months, from brand story to articles to product launches.

‘Youth’ came out of the brand values: many of the buyers were older and just as comfortable with technology.

Also

  • LinkedIn articles and posts for the founding partner of a London pre-seed venture firm, written in his voice from voice notes and calls, including a founder storytelling series and portfolio exit stories.
  • Four months running the X account of a US technology CEO.
  • Content strategy, a 60-day launch plan and company-page LinkedIn content for a hardware engineering firm in Shenzhen.
  • Content strategy and copywriting for Bluecrux, a pharma supply chain consultancy.

Writing samples

Where client work sits under NDA, some samples are spec pieces for invented brands, so they can be shown in full. Each says so.

Working with AI

Since 2024 I have designed, built and launched my own AI-led products and editorial projects as a sole founder. They are how I know what AI does well in content and marketing work, and where it still needs a person.

The Agentic Entrepreneur

A commercial product sold directly online: a 24-skill business operating system built on the Agent Skills open standard, now governed by the Linux Foundation. Methodology, product architecture, positioning, copy, pricing and launch, with a companion book and a newsletter as the main nurture channel.

You & AI

An advisory platform for professionals and small businesses dealing with AI disruption. It includes The Guidance Crisis, a 6,000-word report on AI workforce readiness built on original data synthesis, two books, assessment frameworks and a briefing series.

About Claude

A limited-run daily podcast and newsletter on AI developments, written, edited and produced solo for the length of its run. It showed broadcast-quality output at a pace that normally takes a team.

Claude is my main working tool, for research, synthesis and early drafts. The interviews, arguments, voice and final edit stay mine. On a recent book-length edit I built an assisted pipeline that produces real Word tracked changes, checks every edit accepts and rejects cleanly, and scans for AI patterns before anything reaches the author.

In April 2016, after AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol, I published an essay arguing against competitive benchmarking as the frame for human and AI relations and for cooperative models instead, six years before ChatGPT made the question mainstream. I have spoken on AI at Ignite Berlin and contributed to a Machine Intelligence Research Institute project on AI and creative cognition.

Books and fiction

I ghostwrite and developmentally edit books for executives, entrepreneurs and business leaders, from interview and voice capture through structure, drafting and revision. Recent subjects include enterprise AI transformation, financial psychology, leadership and operating models, and business narrative. I also edit and ghostwrite fiction, including a psychological thriller series and a full developmental edit of a 146,000-word novel.

As a novelist I won a Kindle Scout Award, and I have been shortlisted for the Northern Book Prize, the Michael Marks Awards and the To Hell With Publishing Prize. I am represented by William Morris Endeavor and Conville & Walsh.

My narrative work includes adventure storylines for Wooga in Berlin, story scenarios for a location-based app, and futures and design-fiction consultancy for Cognizant.

Background

I grew up in Lancashire and spent the best part of a decade working abroad, across Brazil, Germany, Spain, China, Ethiopia and Mexico, before coming home. That helps when copy has to travel between markets. I now live in Southport.
